Mod7 Summary
I would say this was the most engaging chapter of the book. Module 7 goes into detail about wireless area networks, cellular, Bluetooth, different types of high-speed internet, as well as cybersecurity threats, hacks, attacks, Bluetooth attacks and more. The list is particularly long and varied.
I’ve been very interested in the idea of creating a singular public WiFi network that provides high speed free internet to everyone in a town or city. I don’t think any of the technical challenges are there. In my ideal society this would be the norm and standard-a decentralized network of cellular towers and WiFi networks providing connection to everyone in a single space. I think the only problem would be how susceptible it would be to attacks-but being that it is decentralized, one can’t easily just attack the network and destroy the whole base.
I don’t know if all these various large phone carriers is necessarily a good thing to have. Fast internet speeds might seem more like a luxury for some that you can easily just cheap out on, but some people and places might really need that service and shouldn’t just be cut out because they can’t or don’t pay enough. Recently I’ve moved and already paid my boost bill, but they still lowered by speed because of how much cellular I used. Last I made a payment was February 8th.
I had absolutely no Idea there were so many kinds of elaborate cyberattacks that could be done on WiFi networks before reading this chapter. I also didn’t know you could target Bluetooth like that being that they’re just radio waves. I do think the book is a bit outdated when saying not to save your passwords on your device though, because Google, Microsoft and other services have a password saving feature that requires a fingerprint or master password. Most people in my life I’ve known who program study cybersecurity. I have an uncle in the military who actually conducts cybersecurity operations.
