New Perspectives-Module 2 Summary

Module 2 went into detail about how email works, email etiquette and Gmail. It talks about The features of an email app and email addresses (ex: Userhere@gmail.com).  It also mentions the various email apps there are, contacts, forwarding, replying to and spam. I believe at one point email was probably more popular than texting and phone calls in the early days of the internet, though I personally find that a bit odd considering emails are more for large bodies of important information rather than casual conversation, such as a business or maybe an update on how someone is doing to their family.  The idea of people just casually sending short, quick emails back and fourth is interesting.

The module talks about spam and apparently, 90% of all email messages are just that. It would pretty much be impossible to monitor every single one of these so unless advertising were somehow made illegal on the internet, we’d have to assume it’s just something here to stay. I am pretty sure there might be programs that can sort and eliminate spam for you faster than the main email service providers anyway, though sometimes these work too well and might place things that aren’t spam into your spam folder. On that note, the problem of spam is just as large when it comes to texting and phone calls.

On a personal note, Gmail is the mail app I’ve used the most throughout my life, since in school we always used Google apps and chromebooks. I remember years ago I used to send an email to myself whenever I needed to remember something important. In all this time, however, I had never actually used Gmail’s label feature. I always assume it was something I wouldn’t really need and I didn’t know what it was for. After reading the chapter though, I’m planning on giving it a try.
